Show me the Free Games...

Free Games

There are a lot of games in the world, some are expensive, others are free, and there are a lot in between. Here in the free section you can see that games don't necessarily have to cost any money at all to be good. All you need is some time, and a bit of space on your hard drive.

Of course, there are some different ideas on what constitutes a free game. If you want to talk about free games, join the Free Games group, it's completely free! We even have a specific discussion on what should be tagged as free, and what shouldn't. Note that free to play games shouldn't be tagged as 'free', but instead as 'free2play'.

Theme: DIY Intelligence

This theme might not be for everyone, but it's interesting, and it's free. The theme is not just about games using artificial intelligence, but games where you as a player can work on, or in some way define it.

First off, there is NERO (short for Neuro-Evolving Robotic Operatives), a strategy games where you have to train up intelligence of soldiers so they can be used in battle. It's unique for a strategy game in that you don't control the soldiers directly, instead in the battle the soldiers act totally independently based on the training they have gotten previously.

The artificial intelligence, and the way they are trained gives opportunity for enormous depth, letting you (if you are willing to invest time in learning the game yourself) develop soldiers which use a wide array of tactics, from just rushing the eney to splitting up in groups and flanking just to mention a few.

Once you've trained up your soldiers you can put them together into squads and pitch them against other squads you've made, or squads your friends have made.

Next, we have two racing games, RARS and TORCS. TORCS is basically an evolved version of RARS, so I will just focus on that one. TORCS is a 3D racing game, and a pretty standard one, you have a number of cars and tracks which you can race with and on. The twist comes from that you can actually program the computer opponents to race against, or have race against each other.

RARS is similar, but is much more focused on the AI side, while TORCS is really made with the aim that you can play it just as a racing game if you want.
