Armed Assault

Armed Assault (ArmA) is a first person tactical military shooter from the creators of Operation Flashpoint - a game with large elements of realism and simulation. This game features a blend of large-scale military conflict spread over large areas alongside the more closed quarters battle. The player will find himself thrust in the midst of an engaging and expanding storyline, fighting against smart, aggressive enemies who will continually provide a challenge over a massive landscape.

Bottom Line: It depends. Extreme Realism
First thing to remember about Bohemia Interactive is that they developed Operation Flashpoint, and then lost the license to Codemasters.

Imagine trawling through a forest at night for twenty minutes, looking through the green hue of your night vision goggles for any possible sign of movement. You've taken a bullet to the leg so your limping and breathing hard all the time trying to avoid the enemy troops you know are scouring the forest for you. There search helicopter flies overhead and you freeze with fear, the edge of the forest is yards away, beyond that an enemy installation with the truck that you have to blow, or the enemy will be bale to fuel there armored column leaving tomorrow morning. You reach the edge of the forest and estimate a 30 second sprint through an open field to the next cover, after watching the terrain you make your move, your last move. Right there and then it's all over, you have no idea how or where from but your soldiers body has blood pouring from his head and you have to start the 40 minute mission again. It was heart pounding and exhilarating but was it worth it?

Armed Assault is the unofficial sister of operation flashpoint, a completely new engine, one island the size of all 3 flashpoint islands put together. It looks stunning if you have the computer to run it, i don't and its not so pretty. My main love of flashpoint is the 100+ player multiplayer, with the added join in progress.

It's ultra realistic with sprint times and movement only as a soldier would, bullets kill in one shot or wound you into crawling. Quite simply only for the hardcore, but get some friends together parachute into an contested village and with advanced communication you and you friends can fight a war as real as you could possibly ever want it to be.
Learning Curve: Takes a while
