More About DICE
This is an older prototype and one of my first attempts to write a Direct3D application from scratch.
DICE uses the same game mechanic as some other similar dice games, most notably Devil Dice on the PSone.
I made this prototype in about 2 weeks over a winter break. I attempted to create a robust Scene Graph as well as trying to learn D3D. Failed on the Scene Graph (it worked but fuck it was a mess) but gained some good experience with D3D.
This game was never intended to be seen or played by anyone other than my self. It is just a prototype I made to test some ideas and learn Direct3D. But i have provided a download as a couple people asked for it. If it doesn't work then oh well.
GAME INSTRUCTIONS
This game is very rough with little game balance. You might die very quickly or play for so long you get bored and just quit.
The objective is to score points by 'collapsing' the dice that appear on the grid.
Use the keyboard arrow keys to move. When die appear on the grid they slowly rise. Once they haven risen you can push and slide them around. Or as they are rising you can climb on top of the die and roll them around to change the number that is facing up on the die.
Scoring Points
To score points you connect die with the same number by positioning then adjacent to each other.
You need to connect two 2's to score 4 points, or three 3's to score 9 points, ... or six 6's to score 36 points. Once the die are connected and 'scored' they will slowly decend into the floor. This can give you enough time to connect other like die to form chains and score exponential points. e.g. connect four 4's together to score 16 points, then connect another 4 to score 64 (4x16) points, then another, and another.
Scoring Extra Time
Die with the number 1 on top are special. Instead of points you get extra time. To score 1's you connect them to falling die. Connect a single 1 to a group of falling die and all the 1's on the grid will be scored and add time.
If you run out of time the game is over.
I think my highest score is 400k.
A general strategy is to alternate between scoring lots of 6's (worth the most points) and scoring 1's (giving you extra time).
Enjoy, and please keep in mind that this was made rapidly without thought for polish or balance.
