The Quest for Glory series in general is elegant and excellent, and its first installment is no different. So You Want To Be A Hero is a great experience with a lot of excellent times, good humor, and an interface that's not to be beat. Although dated, having to understand the concepts of what's going on around you is important. Typing and reading skills are -also- important, as that's the only way you can figure things out. Battle is quick and simple to learn, although difficult to really master until your skills are considerably greater than your original character has. Also, making different builds of character and learning new things, along with porting said character with you into the next five games in the series, makes Quest for Glory a great game to play any old time. I've been on and offing it for many years.
So You Want To Be A Hero is one of the best old games around. It's playable even today, and with the updated 256-color version (which I believe loses a lot in terms of gameplay) it can even appeal to more graphically jaded players.
