Smilies Quest

Smilies Quest was a simple project I made all on my own (except for the music) leisurely over the course of about a year. It started off as simply an experiment - whether or not I could simulate light in 2D - and became what a somewhat long-ish puzzle game with unlockable endings, an unlockable hard mode, and an unlockable mini game.

It follows the story of an emoticon who is imprisoned by another, jealous emoticon, and his journey to escape from his dungeon-like prison and save himself as his friends. Nothing fancy, but it's not about the story anyways.

It's simple to play...simply use the arrows to move around and spacebar to flip switches/talk to people/read signs.

Bottom Line: It depends. Small screen may be an issue
Smilies Quest is small written game created in what looks like a simple game maker.

The Game is basically a puzzle game in which you move blocks around and navigate mazes to solve your objective.

Now while these games tend to be challenging and fun, and Smilies Quest has its moments there are a few glaring issues which tend to affect the experience.

First let me cover the positive aspects of the game. Control is for the most part fluid, the cut scenes although cheesy are animated appropriately and there are a great deal of emoticons in the game to get hints from or to talk with.

Now onto the issues, the author states he was experimenting with light in a 2D game, and while he more or less has included an implementation which although neat, it is rather jarring. In fact I'd say the biggest issue I had with this game (other then the next one) is how the light behaves. There are only a few shades of light, and the black area is too sudden and strong. Especially when the lantern area is used in these areas the lighting feels very forced.

The second issue is the screen is way to small. With no evident way to enlarge the screen and no supplied readme file, I'll assume it isn't possible. The screen size also effects the puzzles as they seem designed to meet this tiny area the puzzles never truly realize the potential they could achieve in this type of game.

However if you can passed the few issues mentioned above that and don't mind some simple puzzles and exploring, then smilies quest will likely be a humerous adventure to hold your attention.
