Unreal Tournament
Upon its release in early November 1999, Unreal Tournament surprised the gaming community with its rock-solid network code, challenging single-player bot play, unique gameplay modes, and polished presentation. The critics were equally impressed and UT was awarded with Game of The Year honors by a variety of publications, including GameSpy.com and Computer Gaming World. UT was later ported to the PS2, Dreamcast, Linux, and Mac.
Years later, people are still making great modifications and add-ons for UT. One successful community spawned mod, Tactical Ops, was even recently released as an entire stand-alone commercial product.

Bottom Line: A great game despite it's age. So the Unreal Tournament franchise is a bit old, but this game still ranks up there in my personal top 10. Made famous by it's Capture the Flag aspect, UT has lended it's ideas to many games over the years.
Whether you play online or just want to whack bots endlessly UT can provide. When it comes to online play CTF seems to take the cake. With the option of being able to download mods, textures, sounds, maps, and even skins upon joining a server you can instantly get the full experience the the owners/admins want you to have on their server. The maps are almost endless, to this day people still pump out maps for the original UT. Some good, some bad, some great, some horrifying, all interesting with only a few exceptions. Cheating in Unreal Tournament became a problem to the point of several 3rd party groups and players pumping out CSHP or Client Side Hack Prevention mods. These have done a pretty good job in keeping people honest whether they want to be or not. Though not 100% the odds of coming across a cheating player are still pretty rare. To this day I still play UT on a semi-regular basis, and in my opinion it's still the best FPS out there that doesn't provide a Z Axis. Learning Curve: Instant!
