Advent Rising

Advent Rising offers up the legend that a powerful, ancient race will one day unite the universe. Millions of cultures from vastly distant worlds revere and hallow these mythological beings known as humans. One race, the Seekers, know humans actually exist and feel threatened by their potential power. Under the guise of benevolent explorers, the Seekers travel throughout the galaxy in a desperate attempt to eradicate any human society they unearth. Players assume the role of Gideon Wyeth, a remnant of the last human outpost, on the brink of discovering the incredible powers that lay dormant within him. Another race, the Aurelians, worship Humans as gods and, in a way, try to warn them of the Seekers.

Advent Rising

A Third Person shooter with a unique targeting system and a cool mixture of magic and weapons(both of which is equipped the same way), this game creates a unique experience that, sadly, will never be followed.

On a backwater world, a space farthing humanity discovers the first Aliens, who are peacefully orbiting their planet in a massive ship larger than the humans own Space Station. Inside, they are warned of another Alien race who intend to, at any moment, destroy all humans they can find on or around the planet, and tells them of their unknown past.

Abilities include duel welding weapons or spells, sheilds, fireballs, force push and others- all great spells, but not one really stands out as oringial. And thats what really plagues this game. The Vehicles, enemies, enviroments- none seem to be really an exclusive idea. I mean, the first area you're in is a City under attack, and this area lasts for about 6 levels. A City Under Attack? During an Alien Invasion? Wow!

The same thing plagues nearly all the games levels- all of them feel cohesive enough, but none of them take that extra step in being unique to other games.

Nonetheless, a real surprise is both the strongly story driven gameplay, that leads you through in the pursuit of understanding the universe greater, and the truly astounding soundtrack- a sweeping sorrowful sound that will inspire you when you first play the game, but that will drive you mad half way through the game because of overuse.

The gameplay itself is solid, offering challenges without it being impossible, and in a few cases, allows you to sculpt the story. Unfortunately, the game targeting system, that is controlled by flicking the Analog stick usually reserved for camera control, is the one that allows you to loosely cycle through enemies, often erratically.

Post-humorously, it seems this game, alike the ill fated Beyond Good and Evil, was intended to be a trilogy, with a cliffhanger ending, but will never receive a sequel. However, in recent months a comic book expansion of the story has appeared- and a possiblity of a Novel.

Despite these glaring flaws, though, this game is very enjoyable, and I would have to recommend it.
