Allegiance, the multiplayer space-combat game from the minds of Microsoft Research, combines the challenges of tactical squadron-based combat, intense one-on-one space dogfights, and amazing graphical and sound effects into a space-action experience like nothing you've seen before.

In Allegiance matches are played between teams (usually two) either online or through a local network. Each team has a commander, who has a special role in the team. The mix of real-time strategy and space shooter comes from that while the commander has to keep a tactical overview of matters, each member of the team plays a unit. The commander decides which resources should be harvested, and what technology, structures and ships should be invested in. Move orders from the commander will show up on the HUD of the orderd team member, who can allow movememt by autopilot, or fly to the destination manually.
Each team has to perform a number of tasks, such as fight for dominance over resources, and gather those resources. The resources can be used to research new technologies or to build new structures and ships.
The game is spread over several sectors between whcih players can jumps through so called alephs (or wormholes as most people would call them). The goal of the normal game mode is the elimination of the enemy team's base.
Allegiance was developed by Microsoft and released in 2000, after lacking commercial success all support from Microsoft was withdrawn (including closing all official servers) in 2002. In 2004 the game was made free along with the complete source code, and updated builds are being released regularly.
It should be noted that Allegiance has a steep learning curve, and requires a considerable investement of time from the player.
