Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Download Now
Imagine a place of wonder, where magic and technology hold equal sway, and an adventurer might just as easily wield a flintlock pistol as a flaming sword. A place where great industrial cities house castle keeps and factories, home to Dwarves, Humans, Orcs and Elves alike. A place of ancient runes and steamworks, of magic and machines, of sorcery and science.

Welcome to the Land of Arcanum

Arcanum is the first game to come from the development house Troika Games, LLC, started by former Fallout team members Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson. This team takes the depth of gameplay and world-building in role-playing games to entirely new levels of realism and excitement.

Arcanum creates a compelling new world where magic and technology coexist in an uneasy balance. As Arcanum opens, the mechanical age has only recently arrived in this ancient land where Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and other races have learned to survive in the new sprawling industrialized cities. But this radical shift from magic to technology has created a potentially explosive situation. As the townspeople and other thinkers begin mass production of light bulbs, batteries, eyeglasses and guns, the Mages grow leery. This tightly wound setting is the starting point from which the character must set out on his quest.

The soundtrack is really good, I like listening to it while working. The game was also ok. The setting and atmosphere was nice, but there were some bugs and the story wasn't quite as engaging as I would have hoped (being a Fallout fan).

what i liked most was having the ability to equip npc characters with weapons/equipment. Walk by a beggar without shoes - drop some - go away - come back, guess who's "wearing" it..
This way you could possibly save an npc's life when say a town gets attacked (eg. icewind dale) by having them wear something more than normal clothing. or how bout equipping the fella 'guarding' the graveyard full of skeletons?
but yes, stopped playing quite a while ago - bugs kept making my character evil during leveling later on.

One of the best RPGs ever made IMHO. Great plot, character development and battles. Unmatched non-linearity, which reminds a lot of Fallout but have even more! Also, schemes, which allow you to construct new items are great.

Unfortunately, game is ridden with bugs. But layer official and un-official patches fix that.

"I liked the soundtrack a heckuva lot more than I liked the game" sounds familiar :) this game has one of the best soundtracks ever. really, one of the best. i loved the whole steampunk setting. it was new and rehreshing. the design was also quite good, but i never finished it. i regret it now, cuz i really loved the setting, but the combat was too fast and confusing. a shame really. if they worked on this game a few mounths more it could have been a classic. too bad.

I played the game for about an hour and then put it down, like a rabid animal.

I played this game a long time ago, and I just couldn't get myself to like it for some reason.

When I originally played the game, I didn't care for it as much but when I replayed the game after I felt the music was really great. I guess when I was playing it then, I was to much of a stubborn Fallout fan.

I liked the soundtrack a heckuva lot more than I liked the game, which I already liked quite a bit. In fact, so taken with the music was I, that I recorded one of the string quartet tracks for electric guitar quartet! You can hear it at http://www.benvesco.com/songs/ if you so choose, but you'll have to do the work of fixing the spaces this crazy site may put in the link ;) The track is called "Caladon Catacombs"
