Bottom Line: If you're expecting a "real" tribute to Breakout, you'll be disappointed. The game does look slick, very polished, but having played the games it claims to tribute made this one less enjoyable; unless you can enjoy playing the same game over - and over, and over, and over - again, this might only last you a couple plays (the only reason it lasted so long for me is because I don't play these games too often). I might be a bit harsh, but remakes automatically get one star knocked off the overall rating - if you want to make an actual tribute to something, not only do what it did, but fix/improve it.
Aside from the "tribute" issue, lets look at the game mechanics: Lightning fast reflexes will be needed to clear the board in this updated tribute to Breakout and Arkanoid. The problem with such a requirement is that this game has poor 'mouse capture'; many times I would loose a life (ball) by being too "lightning" fast...making the mouse cursor exit the game altogether. This by far was frustrating, because I know I would have had it if the cursor would stay focused to the game - alas, I made it only to level 7 on the most difficult setting. The music was great, I loved how each stage had its own theme; I wanted to say it also needed a graphical expression of sorts to go with the music, but it is a bit cliche-ish to switch themes between stages in a game like this. This game also has faulty character (ball) clipping, since the ball is able to slip past blocks on occasion (not sneaking in from the side). Basically, the trick of the game is to get the ball at the top-side of the blocks. To conclude, I'm not too sure how to rate the four areas (gameplay, replay value, graphics, and fun factor), because this is practically a clone of the original (as far as originality is concerned). The only reason I was able to play it for as long as I did was because I wanted to get to level eight, but it didn't hold my attention past my fourth-ish play-through. Learning Curve: Instant!
