BZFlag has that feeling I get with many open source projects. While the basic idea is good, and I'm sure the technical part is well made, the user interface and graphics are below par. That said, you can really have a good time with this game. I've played it quite a bit with people sitting in the same room. And much of the enjoyment you get from the game is taunting your opponents, which is great fun when they are sitting just a few metres away.

Playing it over an internet connection with people you can't see, and don't know, is considerably less fun though. You are left with a game which doesn't look too good, has controls which can feel sluggish, and a mass of anonymous opponents.

If you want to play this game, make sure you play it with people you can either see, or at least hear and talk to. It really makes all the difference.
