I'd almost say that City of Heroes requires a great deal of imagination and creativity in order to get the most out of it.
It definitely behooves you to read the mission summary your contact gives you, the clues you find and the NPC dialogue. It's not all shoved in your face with too-long cutscenes, so most people miss all of the description. Other than that, it's really no different from the "kill so many of X" or "bring me items X, Y, and Z" quests in other MMOs.
The character creation engine is unparalelled--so much so that it may have ruined me for other MMOs because of the "cookie cutter" feel of their character options. There truly is something for everyone, from fantasy to scifi. Play a Viking, or a sorcerer, a military commando, or a high tech robot whose primary directive is to protect the city.
There's no economy to speak of as yet, but a crafting system is coming in "Issue 9." Which is another great perk--free new content every few months! They added badges, then they added capes, Super Group bases (if you've purchased City of Villains), recently gave their veteran players wings, and soon, we'll get all that craftable swag that players of other MMOs seem to covet so.
City of Heroes is a goldmine for stretching your creativity. Best of all? Be a hero. Save the world.
