Deus Ex is one of the best games of all time and the game that sets the standards all modern FP-RPGs shooters should be judged on.
The game has a superb story worthy of the cryptic name it has. Developed by one studio headed by one of the most talented video games developers ever, Warren Spector and his studio Ion Storm, Deus Ex tells the story of a highly technologically advanced society in decay, where the claws of poverty, terrorism and worldwide pandems are the order of the day.
Handling the fight against terrorism and a death threatening worldwide disease there's an organization called Unatco, short for United Nations anti terrorist coalition, which fights to help deliver vaccines and supplies to people who need them. You play as a highly advanced cyborg called "JC. Denton", a very special type of cop trained to do almost anything. But enough of the story, as I don't want to give any spoilers that might ruin your experience.
The game is a FPS-RPG of sorts. JC as an advanced cyborg has many abilities you will encounter yourself using during the game. These abilities are acquired with credits that you'll receive upon completing each mission and some of them will depend on the method you use to accomplish your task.
As JC you will be able to hack both, your enemies and friends computers using your upgradeable abilities. You can also bypass a range of devices such as robots, cameras, locked doors and even people with the right skills when you manage to upgrade them enough.
You'll also receive additional upgrades in the form of upgrade canisters scattered all over the game which will give you two options for a new ability, such as being able to regenerate your health or stop missiles and projectiles coming from enemies, robots, turrets and so on.
One of the brightest points of this game is the range of options it gives you to complete any given mission. There's always a way to get what you want, whether it is gunning you way through(Supposing you have the firepower at that moment) or using a stealth tactic, or just receiving help from someone you helped along the way, there's always an interesting mean to complete missions.
There's also a healthy dose of conversations you can have with the NPCs which will help you both, get a good sense of the story being tell as well as progressing your missions.
The graphics are for the most part unimpressive, even around the time the game was released. Character models look bland with weak textures, and the world backgrounds and textures look very pixelated even with max settings being enabled.
The sound is topnotch for the most part. Some techno tunes are very catchy and the arms sound is for the most part very good.
The best part though is the voices of some characters like JC, which really do a very good job of involving you with the story of the game. There are also voices for each and every one of the characters you interact with.
Controls are standard FPS controls, although some mechanics will feel clunky at first it's nothing you won't get used to and forget with the immersive set of the history and gameplay.
The replay value is also very high. When you try to go throughout missions in a different path the scenario will seem completely different to you, not to mention the challenge alone is worth it, and the reactions of the game to your actions are very interesting as well.
Deus EX is a game that's not seen every day. Challenging, with likeable characters and topnotch gameplay, you should play this game now. Even if you think it looks outdated the gameplay and level design elements can endure the test of time and give you an unforgettable experience.
So fret not and pick this game now.
