Doom

The mother of all FPSes...

Doom. Run around, blast demons, get weapons. Uncompromisingly intense, with no shortage of challenge, Doom ushered in a new era - the age of the FPS.

Page is linking to Planet Doom and a book, but is missing a link to Doomworld?!

I'd heard about this game on the BBS's and from friends. When I finally tried the demo, I was floored. But Doom II was already out, so I bought that and never played past the demo levels of Doom. I was disturbed at first by the insane amount of gore it had, but quickly learned to enjoy it.

Yes the graphics suck. They did not age well at all. Still fun as hell though!

Don't forget the Sega 32X version!

(Also, IDSPISPOPD, so, nyeah! :)

There are a million ways to enjoy this game today. But nothing will replace my memories of trying to get deathmatch to work over a serial cable.

Simple yet satisfying. Extremely good game, at least for its era

I went on Xbox Live Arcade and got this the day it was available. I didn't think i'd be playing Doom a lot ever again but I was wrong :D

I'm thinking you could find DOOM for free somewhere, rather than fork up $20.

Still 13 or so years is a pretty good "shelf-life", lol

Well KillBot, at least Epic listened. =)

Anyways I love this game, but I feel the XBLA port was a bit tarnished, anyone else agree?

I seem to recall being scared shitless the first time i played it. Though then again i was a tad bit young.
Didn't really get into it till a few years later, by which time it felt mostly repetitive and tedious. Still, a pretty decent game for its time.

Those interested in playing some CTF DOOM over ther internet should check out ZDoom, it's a port of the engine that reads the .wad files. It's tons of fun.

DOOM. I mean ... come on! :)

Many purists will argue that "B.J. Blazkowicz" and Wolfenstein 3D gave birth to the FPS (and I agree to a point), but the world didn't pile on a mile high until DOOM came along a little over a year later. This title spawned a generation of games and gamers like no other has ever done. Every FPS we see today borrows something from the DOOM franchise.

I remember when the shareware came out; every time I would mention it, someone would say, 'Did you say DUNE?'. No. DOOM! What?!

It's funny to think about those times and how no one had an idea of where this little shooter would take us. Well, look at us now.

Thank you, DOOM. For everything.

Two of my favorite gaming memories are starting up the Doom demo for the first time and being completely blown away, and my first deathmatch... over a 28.8 modem.

Every game should have a chainsaw.
