Bottom Line: It depends. If you love strategy, give it a shot.
Freeciv is an excellent clone of the commercial Civilization games, and it's been in development for years.

While the basic mechanics of the game are fully functional and work well, things such as computer AI remain passable at best. Diplomacy with the AI usually falls flat, or doesn't work at all.

Graphically the game is decent, different tilesets are available from the Freeciv website, and you can create your own. By default, however, the game is remnicent of Civilization 2 - which may not be a bad thing to some users.

In terms of actual gameplay, Freeciv is excellent. If you want bells and whistles, you may find Freeciv lacking. But then, it's FREE... so you're getting pretty awesome value for your dollar here. I've spent many nights playing Freeciv against friends, and it can be a massive time sink if you let it become one.
