This game gets sold short all the time for its odd weapon balance in multiplayer, but where it truly stands out is in it's single player mode. Me and my friends would stand in EB for hours playing through the first few levels of the campaign over and over. Even with Halo2, Gears of War and GRAW, I still find myself coming back to Halo over and over.
Single player looking back may not be all the impressive, but this game was one of the first to really do cooperative FPS right which was a really big step.
I enjoyed Halo's multiplayer much more than Halo 2 due to many factors that aren't going into (mainly weapon balance if you can believe that!).
I just played this for the first time today. I picked it and Halo 2 up for £6 each (approx $10.80) so I could play it on my 360. It was well worth it too; I'm enjoying it as much as GoW. I'm gonna complete it before I play Halo 2, which looks even better.
Utterly amazing game. Well polished, well written, smooth and fluid gameplay, and revolutionary features that we can still see the effects of on games today. 5 out of 5 easily. :)
Not to mention it was originally on Xbox, that is where alot of it's greatness came from. Granted I didn't play alot of Halo due to lack of xbox, but once there was Halo 2, I got the xbox and Halo... I liked it, co-op was excellent, we got those wart hogs very far into the level, far past where they were supposed to be, it took alot of bashing and ramming, but it was fun.
There are two types of people who played Halo: those who regularly LAN'd it with friends and those who did not.
Opinions are divided for that reason. As a multiplayer game, the two weapons grenade melee formula meant that it was a more strategic, slower-paced game than most FPSs at the time. The addition of an incredibly powerful spawn weapon meant that it played very differently from other FPSs.
I could go on for a few hours about why Halo was in fact revolutionary, but the real solution is to simply call it my favorite game and not insist that it was one of the best FPS's ever.
I have to give Halo at least a 3 just for its vehicle physics. Compared to any other game of its time, Halo had the easist, smoothest-driving vehicles that I'd ever soon in a game.
I'd have to agree with Ayrik. It is certainly one of the more polished titles of the FPS genre, but did not offer much that hadn't already been done elsewhere.
