Kingdom of Loathing

The Kingdom of Loathing (or KoL, as it has come to be known by its player base) is a free, comical RPG, brought to you by the folks at Asymmetric Publications.

KoL is currently in open beta -- it's open to the public to play, but it's not quite finished. More features and things to do are being added on a nearly daily basis. Despite its unfinished state, it has already attracted a thriving community of interesting, intelligent, and helpful players.

KoL is, and always will be, free to play, but donations are appreciated and rewarded.

KoL is played from the comfort of your browser, and is adorned with a staggering array of stunning hand-drawn images. It is turn-based, which means you get a certain number of turns (Adventures) each day.

Bottom Line: Play it!
I was introduced to this pseudo RPG type game by a friend. It came highly recommended. I dived in and soon found myself quite addicted to the game. The beauty of this game is its simplicity. It has very basic crudely drawn graphics. They are often humorous. The text in the game often contains inside jokes.

It is limited by the number of adventures you can have each day, but this can be augmented by having your character "drink alcohol" (with side effects) or "eat".

The idea is to gain levels and experience to finally beat the Naughty Sorceress. Once the Sorceress is beat the game can be played again by "ascending". This gives the player a chance to keep one skill from the previous round and go through the same adventures again. Each time the player can choose to be a different character (such as a disco bandit, pastamancer, seal clubber, turtle tamer, or an accordian thief.)

This game is like no other game out there. It is entirely web based. But is uniquely entertaining.

I am on my 4th round of play. Though I have slowed down my play somewhat, I am still active. I have been playing this game on and off for the past year and a half or so.

I have contributed money to this game (which is optional). A nice benefit, however, is that my character will never be deleted from inactivity.
