Neverwinter Nights

According to wikipedia:
"Neverwinter Nights (NWN), produced by BioWare and published by Infogrames (now Atari), is a third-person perspective computer role-playing game that is based on third edition Dungeons & Dragons and Forgotten Realms rules (with minor changes). It was originally to be published by Interplay Entertainment, but the publisher's financial difficulties forced the change. Infogrames released Neverwinter Nights for Windows on June 18, 2002. BioWare released the freely downloadable Neverwinter Nights Linux Client in June 2003. MacSoft released a Mac OS X port in August 2003."

I really enjyed this game from start to finish, single and multiplayer. But I think I was bit biased. Mostly it had one of the greatest level editors I have ever seen. It was the perfect mix of ease-of-use and complexity.

As just about every other commenter has noted: The single-player aspect of this game is a bit dull.

This game was looking to be very awesome, it had great potential, a fine plot, a good campaign creating toolkit, fitting graphics and neat special effects... but the actual gameplay is quite boring, the difficulty level jumping up and down randomly, and sometimes the controls were sluggish.

The extra Premium campaigns and the expansion packs were nice, though, giving you more hours of gameplay without any drastic changes.

Ironically, I thought the single player campaign was tons of fun. I never finished it, though.

I've played the game for about 3 years now, and still enjoy it. That is, the multi player aspect of it. I've only played through the original campaign once, and never finished the campaigns that came with the expansions. I hope more games will learn to embraces the concept of letting the community create modules/worlds/content like NWN.

It was all about user-created content and multiplayer --- especially with a live DM. Anyone who only played the single-player campaigns that came with the game (and its expansions) really only played a tech demo.

The original game is pretty boring. It's the user base and their creations what really makes this game good.

Some of the mods are much better than the original campaign.

With the internet drifting towards user-generated content now, NWN had taken games into similar direction five years ago. Sure, it wasn't the first game to feature a toolset, but the scale of it was just mind-boggling - several millions, I think. And thousands of user-created modules.

Hope this trend continues into the future games.

Loved this game. Single player was pretty but multiplayer was awesome. I played through one of the user created campaign worlds to 20th level twice and still hadn't been everywhere or finished all the possible quests. This from a guy who mostly plays FPS games and has a large collection of unfinished games gather ing dust on the shelf.

Tried single player, couldn't play more than a few hours, it was just so damn boring. Might try out multiplayer some day though.

Unfortunately the friend that begged me to buy it to campaign with him was diverted to other things before I completed even the basic edition. I agree that it's not that engaging for single player unless you're a real genre fan, but with mp I had fun.

Sadly never quite got into it - though then again i don't like RPG's that much. The box is currently gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
Still, i thought it was cool that they ported it to linux.

This game had (and has) such a great community surrounding it. Its incredibly powerful (and fairly easy-to-learn) Toolset allowed users to create some really interesting modules. For a while, there were several persistant worlds that were built with NWN's Toolset. It was a bit of DnD meet's old-school MUD.

A game with really incredible potential - though the single player adventure was mediocre, the possibility to create live-run D&D games online is quite unique and impressive.

The game also has an almost limitless number of player-created expansion adventures, some of which are actually superior to those included in the game. In a fairly unique and surprising move, BioWare has published some of the most popular community-created expansions in their later compilations of the game, and on their website. Cool!
