Ink!

Ink!, a 2D platformer / brawler, combines classic game genres in a unique manner. In Ink everything is black and white; color has been stripped from every corner of the world. Vern, an aspiring young artist, is out to use the talents he has learned for one mission: to repaint the world. Vern will have to travel through 16 levels and 4 worlds to accomplish this feat. Everything in the Ink world has been hand drawn by our artists, including all of the art assets and animations. Ink is a cross-genre game that blends platforming and brawling like never before. Based on the Torque Game Builder engine, this project isn't a one-off student hack job, but a complete project ready for publication, pulling together the talents of a diverse crew of students and creating fresh, original content from the ground up.

Lead ArtistLived in my cubeEarly in development, we tossed around a variety of art ideas, and intended originally to hand draw everything on light boards. This idea was scrapped for purposes of time and coherent visual design, and replaced with the visually brighter, more cartoon-like art direction. However, our monsters are still partially inspired by this hand drawn design.

ProgrammingLived in my cubeThinking to answer this question has made me cry inside, deep down, where tears turn to pure liquid evil that will one day fuel the forces of my killer robot army from which there will be no escape.

One to two word things that will make a number of people on the project bust out in laughter so far:

-Sheep
-Lightish Red
-Eraser Projectiles
-Megaman
-Noses
-Metroids
-...etc

I'd continue but I don't think the list actually ends, especially around 4-5 AM.

Lead DesignerStill having nightmaresI encountered some problems while running this project.

- Our main character has no nose...
- We have a humming bird that follow the
player, that everyone called Navi (it's really called Pip).
- We were never off of crunch time.
- I now know you can live on 4 hours of sleep. Until the Kidneys hurt at least.
- Red hair dye fades to pinkish to fast.
- Every meeting had a half hour of progress, and a hour of sheep jokes.
- We broke the engine every day.
- Food at 4am is scarce, and nasty.
- People work for free...

But I would not of changed a thing.
