In this historical RTS, like in other many RTS games, is to advance your technological levels and conquer your enemies using your army supplemented by your shrewd tactical prowess.
This game combines the combat-heavy gamplay of the Age of Empires games with a elements of the more city and technology centric Civilization.
Generally speaking, you start the "ancient" age and work your way all the way up to the information age and slightly beyond.
Elements like managing the borders of your empire, exploring, keeping you resource production high, and building more cities are as important as any game of this kind. But features like the ability to build unique age-specific "wonders" which provide special bonuses to the player that manages to construct them first make this game a unique and fun experience to play.

Rise of Nations is probably the best ever RTS that I have played. Starting all the way from the ancient age, where you must research to be able to build new buildings and such. 10/10 -John Claset Learning Curve: Instant!
