Sonic The Hedgehog
In 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog was released on the Master System, Mega Drive and Game Gear. Its fast pace and vivid environments set it apart, and it went on to become a phenomenon, being by far the biggest-selling game on all three platforms. To date, Sonic games have sold in excess of 44 million copies worldwide, placing him ninth in the franchise sales table. (Source: Wikipedia)

The memories start here
As soon as I hear those drums it all comes back. Same goes for the intro music to Green Hill Zone, the greatest level of any game ever.
By the way, I am accepting contributors on this one as Sonic is a team effort (hoho) and clearly lots of people love this. If you'd like to contribute anything, even just a few screenshots, apply and I'll accept. Cheers!
Why it's great
Sonic the Hedgehog is so great because it's a game built around evoking a particular feeling in its players - excitement. Its ability to thrill remains undiminished after all these years - I still get a flutter in the chest when I do a loop-the-loop after picking up the super sneakers, and stringing together a series of tough jumps and enemies is as satisfying as anything in games.
The vivid primary colours and designs of the characters also still stand out after all these years. Sonic's design is truly iconic: whether in colour or silhouette, stationary or at full speed, he is always recognisable and memorable. Dr Robotnik is similarly identifiable, and the first boss remains an all-time classic.
