This classic platformer laid the ground for countless other games to be inspired by its design (including Link's Adventure), and for good reason. The gameplay in Super Mario Bros. is so simple, yet so very addictive. You run, jump and occasionally shoot fireballs to navigate your way through the game. It sounds simple at first, but the increasingly difficult levels will test your skills more than you think. Proof of this system's effectiveness can be seen in New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS- a game made last year that merely adds a few extra "bells and whistles" to this original formula.
This is the only area where I could think to gripe about the original SMB: a little more beyond the magic mushroom and fire flower would have been nice, and a little more diversity in the backgrounds would have helped, too. This complaint is only aplicable due to the improvements made by Super Mario Bros. 3, though. Overall, this game is excellent and a must play for any video game fan.
