The gameplay of Super Mario Land is similar to that of the preceeding Super Mario games. The game is split into four "worlds" each with a set of three thematically linked levels. The worlds are Birabuto which is an Egyptian themed world, Muda which is ocean themed, Easton which is Easter Island themed, and finally the Asian Chai world.
Almost all levels are standard mario platform levels where the player character runs along, but two levels are special. The last level of the ocean world has Mario riding a submarine though the water, and the very last level has Mario flying in a plane though the sky.
