System Shock 2
A dark and moody cyberpunk RPG that brings back to life SHODAN one of the best realized arch-nemesis in computer gaming.
This time around it is a ship - not a station that has been taken over.
Story telling elements such as voice mail as 'ghost' residue are used to great effect. You can see similar mechanisms being used in F.E.A.R and others.
Uses a modified Thief engine so there is a significant focus on 'sneak'- although the game can be player through in multiple ways.

SS2 is one of the most immersing and truly nerve wracking games ever. If you've never played this, please do yourself a huge favor and get it. There is absolutely no way you will be disappointed.
Any game which makes you scurry to a safe place to listen to the audio logs because the sound of them might drown out an approaching minion of the Many has got scaring the crap out of you down to an art.
Even as old as this game is it remains quite immersive, and if you really must, there are some updated textures and models to be found.
Cooperative mode is fun, but that character model has to be the ugliest part of the game lol.
