This game is marvelous! Combining an art style (visually and emotionally - humor) reminiscence of the wacky
Earthworm Jim (and perhaps
The Neverhood), nostalgic game mechanics that scream of
Sonic's past, with a dab of
Donkey Kong Country for perspectives and enticing bonus rooms, you won't go wrong playing this game; it even has a humorous boss battle that alone should make the play worth while. With all that said, don't think this game doesn't have its problems, however minor they be.
Character clipping is horrible...! I ducked under some gun fire - it was evident that 'Fancy Pants' head was low enough (the hair and bullets didn't meet graphically) - and somehow 'Fancy Pants' received damage (perhaps as sympathy to the rat before its inevitable death). Overall though, the character interactivity (both enemies and environmentally) is superb; from running up the side of the wall and defying gravity, to jumping on spiders for a bonus-life, to a well hidden preview of the wall-jumping ability, this game should be a wonderful experience.
As for its music, it compliments the game well, though it be repetitive; it would have been a nice addition to have a bigger diversifying soundtrack - if it does have different tracks for its levels, they are so similar I wasn't able to notice while soaking in the delight of all its wonders. To improve this game, I suggest the following:
More music (though not necessary, since the gameplay is so great)
Better character clipping
Many, many, many MORE levels!!! (I know this is a demo) ^_^
Usually I am one for logic and order, this game is a perfect example of how random objects can be thrown together "properly"; even though the enemies that are encountered don't fit logically in the world they reside, the way the environments and how the game mechanics are presented make the illogical work (exactly how
Earthworm Jim and
The Neverhood got it done). This game has much potential and I look forward to its future installments.
