More About TrackMania Nations

The TrackMania games is a series of racing games with all sorts of craziness. There are the loops, there are both horizontal and vertical jumps, there are splits in the road (not to mention holes and pillars). The only thing that remains constant is a start and a finish (and usually a few checkpoints to stop people from taking shortcuts, as well as for displaying race times).

It's quite enjoyable, but in some ways very different from other racing games. Where in another game you might want to drift, break, and carefully calculate at which speed you should take a corner, you will only want to hold the forward button here, all the time (well, almost). Because you continue to accelerate until you break, release the button, or crash into something, breaking will seriously slow you down when racing against others. The arcade feeling is further incresed by the fact that most tracks are quite short, ranging from tracks which take about 20 seconds to finish, and up to several minutes.

There are a few game modes, there's solo, where you try to get an as fast as possible time on a track on the standard tracks and any other tracks you might have downloaded.

And then there is the main part of the game, online multiplayer. The multiplayer mode is very much like the single player mode. Although you race at the same time as others, there is no collision detection, so you can race straight through other cars (which reall only are there to show you how fast other people are going, and how they are racing). Usually an online match will be 5 minutes of frantically trying to get the best time you can on the given track, after which you get points if you've beaten people better than you.

The online mode is really the mode that you'll enjoy the most, playing solo will only entertain you for so long. The online mode gives you the opportunity to measure up against others. There is also a whole ranking system (which is what the points are for).

Talking of online play, often most if not all tracks on most servers are user-made. This can be great, there are some very good track-makers out there, but it can be bad as well with track makers who for some reason think it's funny to put in dead-ends and other confusing bits, causing you to not try to get the best time during the match, but just finding the finish. The tracks you race on online can easily be downloaded for offline play.
