Vespers3D

Vespers3D is Orange River Studio's first experiment into a new genre of computer gaming, 3D Interactive Fiction (3D/if). It is adapted from the text-based interactive fiction game Vespers, by Jason Devlin.

Vespers, the text IF game, won numerous awards in recent interactive fiction competitions, including first place at the 2005 IFComp and "Best Game" and "Best Writing" (among others) at the 2006 XYZZY awards. Now Jason has joined Orange River Studio in our attempt to bring Vespers to life in 3D, while maintaining the richness of the original text version.

You can play the online Java version of Vespers here.

The Story of Vespers3D...

Vespers3D tells the story of a secluded monastery near the small village of Rovato, during the time of the Black Death. The player assumes the role of the Abbot who, at the start of the game, has made the difficult decision to close the monastery's gates to the villagers in an attempt to keep the plague away. The decision fails, however, and within days most of the monks have succumbed to the disease. Now the handful that remain are filled with guilt, despair, and distrust, and the future looks hopeless -- until the Abbot discoveres a young village girl collapsed at the front door, and the tale takes a decidedly mysterious and evil twist as the monastery spirals into darkness.

Here's a brief video highlighting some of the animation and voice work for Lucca.

Another brief video, this time showing Constantin fully textured, animated, and voice-acted. Not a great quality video, but at least the sound issues have been resolved.

Here's a short animation reel highlighting some of the conversation between the player and Matteo up in the belltower. Not the highest quality video, and a bit small to see much, but it should give a good feel for the interaction.

A brief video showing Matt's excellent animation of Matteo's face producing different expressions.

A brief video showing the animation and voice recording of Constantin in Vespers3D. You'll need to turn your volume way up to hear it. And no, Constantin is not textured yet.

The commands entered are talk to constantin, again, again, and ask constantin about snow.
