The Battle for Wesnoth is a strategy game which takes cues from classical strategy games. You control units on a hegagon grid where you have to defeat your enemies. You have a "General" unit which can recruit units, something which costs money. Money in turn can be made by taking over cities on the map, these cities can also be used for extra defense of a unit and to heal it.

You can choose to play a scenario against the computer or against other human players over a LAN or internet. Alternatively you can take on a campaign, which is a series of scenarios. In campaign mode you carry over your wealth and optionally some units between each scenario.

The game allows for a lot of different user-created content (units, campaigns and so on), and much of what is included in the game is created by the community of players.
