Ultima IV - Quest of the Avatar
Released in 1985 - The most memorable RPG from my childhood. The use of then unheard-of moral dilemmas and spiritual elements in the gameplay, the world reacting to the character's actions in a signifcant way - really blew my mind. For the first time, a CRPG portrayed a convincing, living, breathing world.
Starflight
Released 1986 - Space exploration / trading / RPG / sim at its best. A great pioneer of open-ended, freeform gameplay too. I loved exploring the hundreds of planets, gathering materials and lifeforms, finding artifacts amid the alien ruins and conversing with the various alien races during space travel.
Dungeons and Dragons
Lets face it - without tabletop D & D the world of gaming would be a much different place. Not only did it start me on the path into the wonderful world of RPGs but also inspired me to become a professional artist through looking at all the great fantasy art from the books. I should mention that my first D & D experience was with the red basic set - soon followed by 1st edition Advanced D & D. Those earlier systems were a much different beast than this new fangled 3.5 edition everyone plays now. I kind of miss those simpler times and I think 3.5 is a bit overly rules-heavy but it is still quite enjoyable with a good group.
The Bard's Tale
Released 1985 - The beginning of a great series which expanded upon the Wizardry formula.
