Top 12 Video Games

A gamelist by Alex Swanson

Games can influence you in many ways. These 12 games have all contributed to my life in some way, whether it be through their memorable characters and story, being a defining part of the local culture at one time, or by teaching me a new and unexpected way in which games can be fun, compelling experiences.

Play Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy IV

Perhaps less refined than its successors, but still one of the greatest narratives in a game to date. The compelling, memorable characters each follow distinct paths to face their weaknesses.

Play Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger

A charming, heroic plotline that is perhaps the only RPG to use time-travel to good effect. This generates an even more epic, world-spanning story than most other games of the genre.

Play Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VI

The definitive narrative RPG. This title perfected the technical and storytelling techniques of its generation. Though it suffers from an excess of superfluous characters, the main cast weave a truly compelling story that few other games can match.

Play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

The definitive Zelda title. Its light RPG/adventure formula remains almost unique in the gaming world, despite many unsuccessful imitators.

Play Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. Melee

Another great party-game from Nintendo. Along with Mario Kart, one of my most-played console games. Great handicapping abilities ensure that hardcore players can still have fun with their more casual friends.

Play Fallout
Fallout

The best sandbox RPG to date. The post-apocalyptic setting and dark humor made for a unique blend that has yet to be matched.

Play James Bond 007 Goldeneye
James Bond 007 Goldeneye

The defining game of my first two years of college. The first FPS that ever really captured my interest. Playing 4 people on one screen forced a level of social interaction that added immensely to the experience.

Play Half-Life : Counter-Strike
Half-Life : Counter-Strike

The holy grail of addictive FPS gameplay. I no longer play this game, as it is truly and frighteningly addictive. Yet another formula that has been widely and unsuccessfully imitated.

Play Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart 64

A series that really helped change my perspective of console game playing from something to do alone or with a single friend to a great social activity. Fantastic gameplay and great track design make for infinite replayability.

Play Dynasty Warriors
Dynasty Warriors

An amusing, mindless series with stylish characters and over-the-top combat. Great fun for cooperative play. Shows how gameplay does not always have to be deep to create an entertaining experience.

Play Advance Wars
Advance Wars

A strategy game boiled down to its simplest elements. Light-weight enough for casual play, but deep enough to avoid tedium. Perfect game for long car trips.
