VOPM is a VSTi that emulates the Yamaha 2151 synthchip used in damn near every arcade game from the 80's and all through the 90's. It's free and hard to use but well worth figuring out.

Schizm Tracker is an amazing remake of the god of all trackers Impulse Tracker. Don't let the fact that it's at version 0.5rc1 fool you, it's almost identical to IT at this stage and has more features.

Buzz Tracker is amazing. It's free and more useful to me than most of the software you would break the bank for, so definitely give this one a chance if you've never checked into it.
