These are games that are great. They are great games.
TIE Fighter has an awesome singleplayer campaign. This really pulled me into the Star Wars universe and gave me the sheer delight of becoming an Ace of Space in the Emperor's service.
This game is one of the slowest paced that I have ever gotten attached to. For me, it's more about the challenge, the economy, and the immersion into the medieval world than the action. Subject your serfs to quarrying stone for your next castle. Boot strap your way to the throne! whoop whoop!
Mechwarrior2 Mercenaries is an extremely rich game with well-balanced multiple levels of play. Unlike some of the more recent games in the Mechwarrior series, Mercenaries presented you with much harder choices. Recent games tend to baby you, and there would be no babying in Mercenaries. You are a ruthless cut-throat harnessing your personal war machine with one thing in mind: Money. You must boot strap from the bottom and earn your way to wealth and glory.
This is an excellent RTS with a different twist on unit production. The wide range in units and the huge emphasis on using terrain to your advantage makes this one of my all-time favorites. This is a LAN favorite!
I love this game. Such a fantastic spin on the outer-space theme. There seems to be more of a hint of magic and majesty than science, and the galactic battlefield on all 3 dimensional planes is a blast! Though the original Homeworld holds a great deal of the same features and play style, Homeworld2 seems to really pull it all a bit tighter for a more complete experience.
Tie Fighter ..... and X-wing ... in one game? With multiplayer!? This game provided some my best online-gaming experiences, was rich in the clan-scene, and improved upon the previous Star Wars space titles with a much faster paced game play.
Jedi Knight: DF2 has a rich single player campaign, and an excellent variety of multiplayer styles. The lightsaber and dark/light side force abilities adds loads of playability and interesting multi-play styles. This game marks the last time I truly enjoyed the Star Wars universe. (nothing but a memory now).
Warcraft2 was one of the first PC titles I had played multiplayer locally (though using a modem). This game is extremely well balanced and is still fun to play. In fact, I still rate this higher than any of the other in the Warcraft series. It's fun, it's balanced, and it's casual enough that it doesn't have to suck your soul.
Starcraft. What more can I say?
