Nintendo

Nintendo Company, Limited is a multinational corporation founded on September 23, 1889 in Kyoto, Japan by Fusajiro Yamauchi to produce handmade hanafuda cards. In the mid-twentieth century, the company tried several small niche businesses, such as a love hotel and a taxi company. Over the years, it became a video game company, growing into one of the most powerful in the industry. Aside from video games, Nintendo is also the majority owner of the Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball team in Seattle, Washington.

Nintendo has the distinction of historically being both the oldest intact company in the video game console market and one of the largest and well-known console manufacturers, as well as being the most dominant entity in the handheld console market. As of December 1, 2006, Nintendo has sold over 387 million hardware units, and nearly 2.2 billion software units worldwide.

when you read and relate with game critics who are complaining about the lack of innovation in games, season after season, nintendo speeches make me smile! whoever writes these really knows how to press my buttons.

in nintendo i trust. i like that nintendo has the fucking balls to do their job as a videogame console developer. granted, this isn't the first the world has seen of this technology, but it seemed like the right time to present something new and fresh that is being pushed by a console-king. it's almost unheard of for a game console company pushing innovation like this. it's almost like they care about making an innovative product more than making money - reality or my perception? only marketing knows.

i'm not sure who started the whole "next-gen" term, but as far as i can see the revolution is the closest thing of what i'd like to call an evolution forward. graphic upgrades are great, and i'm glad ps3 and xbox 360 are there to grow in that direction, i am glad it's there for the grognards. what i love about nintendo's innovation risk, is that it creates that which i feel developers are craving: room for growth in game design.
