Imagination is more important than knowledge...
Welcome to my creative little world
My name is Peder landsverk and im from Norway, a small
cold land up here in the north.
I got an overactive imagination and i need to get it out in
some kind of medium, and since im not much of a writer or
film maker, i choose to make stuff for computer
games. I prefer 3d modelling since that is the most rewarding
aspect of game-development.
But still i am a novice, but im working my way up, reading tutorials,
watching the professionals and making stuff together with my online
community, the shapers
This is my arsenal:
SOFTIMAGE |XSI mod tool 4.2
BLENDER 3d
Flash 8.0
Tips and trick's for modeling:
1) Always listen to music, or else your models become bland and boring. Use Aol radio to listen to all new music all the time.
(i allways listen to the metalcore part)
2) Try making something unique. Unique content has 260% more chance of impressing people than a cheap modification on the CT model from counterstrike.
3) Read every tutorial you can find on the internet. Something you dont know 100% how to do? Google it. I allways keep my IE up with the 3 main tutorial sites on separate banners.
You never know ;)
(the wikibook on blender kind of covers that program)
4) Dont force yourself to model. Dont set specific times of the day to model or something. Creativity comes when it wants to.
5) Most importantly: you dont have to have a complete idea of your model before you start modelling. 90% of my work is mostly improvising.
Tecnique tips:
1) SUBSURFING
With a few exeptions, i allways use this sexy modeling method to create the basic shape of my models. Then i flick the "apply" button to finish my models of with the sculpting tool (im not so experienced with that one yet, but im working on it)
This is an easy way to model, and it produces extremely nice results.
You can make viritually anything with these two methods.
For the n00b's:
Subsurfing is a way to round out the edges on an object. For example: if you apply subsurf onto a cube, it changes into a sphere that can be modified as a cube. So if you grab one vertices on the cube and drag it around, you can manipulate 1/4 of the sphere. To apply subsurf, go to the editing panel in the buttons window (the hotkey is f9, and the buttons window is located at the bottom of the screen by default)
Select the object and press Add modifier>subsurf.
You can modify levels to modify the number of faces shown in the editor and render levels to modify how many faces shown in a (guess what?) Render.
And there are alot of different options that you can manipulate, but leave these alone for now.
If you apply subsurf to a cube and extrude one of its surfaces, it gets more of a "hot dog" shape than a sphere shape. If you extrude it so that it takes the shape of a simple stickman, you can easily manipulate the edges/vertices/faces to create cool custom characters.
And if you feel you didnt learn enough about this topic at the noob stage then just fucking google it.
K thx bai ;)
Ill post more tutorials soon, and an example picture that shows you just how far you can come with sculpting and subsurf.
