Chad Freseman

First off I freakn love Real-Time-Strategy

ok, hey

My name is Chad Freseman and I am the designer and project leader of Sixth Extinction

Sixth Extinction is a Proof of Concept Multiplayer PC Demo for a 3D Modern Military RTS Game using the Torque Game Engine 1.5.

A bit of history about the design

I have been working on this game off and on since 2000. A major renovation of the design began in 2003 and in May of 2006 the design was completed (thank god!). This is all I am doing with my life right now; from when I awake to when I sleep I dedicate my time to making this game become a reality.

The merging of realism and RTS is a significant challenge and is full of many pitfalls. A game that is completely realistic becomes a simulator, and by nature, is very boring. A game that looks like a modern military game but plays like a sci-fi game delivers strategies that are counter-intuitive and disappoints gamers looking to execute real war strategies. The struggle (and what took me so many years to solve) was to incorporate enough real-world constraints to allow the gameplay to have the feel of realism, while maintaining an exciting, intuitive and RTS gamer friendly paradigm.

During the design period Warcraft III custom maps were created to aide in verifying the validity of some of the design elements. There was 57 major revisions of the tech tree and I re-wrote the design document more times than I care to remember.

Career Summary

Academics

I started with high school mathematics at a community college and many years later I was accepted into the IT department (upper division) at the University of Minnesota in pursuit of a physics degree.

I have approximately one-and-a-half years of course work to achieve a BS in physics and a minor in both mathematics and astronomy. I am not currently enrolled in school as this game project requires all of my time.

While attending the University of Minnesota I was a member of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), and worked at 3M Company, St. Paul Minnesota.

Technological Experience

At 3M Company I worked first as a tech aide, and finally as a fulltime R&D scientist under the supervision of the department leader. I held a more independent position, while being a sophomore in college, than a graduate chemistry would gain from initial employment.

My work there was in the field of Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer secondary battery research and development. I was entrusted with my own laboratory station, workspace, and delivery hub, and independently operated the low angle X-ray diffraction lab. Approximately half my time was spent doing data analysis the other in a laboratory of some type.

Music

I am also a multi-instrumental musician trained in both classical and modern progressive melodic metal. Guitar is my primary love; I am also proficient at keyboards and percussion. Two demo songs are uploaded Here for your listening pleasure. These songs were recorded using Cakewalk Sonar multi-track midi/audio recording software. I own a significant amount of professional equipment and plan to do the music for the game.
