Kenneth Eaton

Long-time gamer, long-time programmer, not-as-long-time game programmer.

I've always been interested in how games are made, but never had any formal training. Over the years, I've gradually picked up a few things playing around in my off time and designing a 3-D artillery game a la Scorched Earth/Tank Wars. Free time isn't always easy to fit in around a wife, a job, home repairs, a garden, two dogs, and two rabbits, but I manage to get in some late-night gaming/programming.

Career Summary

I'm actually a biomedical engineer by trade, but my work has always involved a great deal of programming and computer modeling/simulation. I got my BS in BME from Boston University and my PhD in computational neural electrophysiology from Duke University.

Most of my programming experience is in C, MPI, and MATLAB, with smatterings of C++, POSIX threads, OpenGL, and soon Java.
My introduction to RPGs, if you don't really count Oregon Trail. Even though you don't get to see an animation of your enemy exploding like a blood sausage, it's still nice to know he did.
This game taught me a very important lesson that I would use in many RPGs: Gamble! Gamble! Gamble! Cosmic Keno anyone?
As with Mars Saga, I like the early attempts at a 3-D-like environment view in the dungeons. And, of course, I like the fact that there were "Eaton Warriors" in the game... shame I had to kill all my brethren.
I used to focus so intently when playing that I wouldn't blink, and my eyes would water like crazy when I was done.
This, along with Tank Wars, was one of the games I played in programming class when the teacher wasn't looking. Very simple, but very rich and addictive.
MMMM... melty Hitler!
I especially loved the Aliens mod. I played it in the dark and it scared the crap out of me!
Something of a reintroduction for me to console RPGs, as most that I played were PC (a few on Nintendo). Also the first PlayStation game I played.
Beautiful, beautiful music!
So, I know most FF fans don't like FF IX much, but this was the first of the series that I played, so it holds a special place in my heart. I next played VIII, VII, and then Tactics... yes, backwards. The decreasing level of graphics didn't bother me as they were still great games. I later played X, X-2, and XII, and have a stuffed Tonberry in my office as additional proof of my addiction.
I absolutely LOVE object creation options in RPGs! The Iron Chef side game was quite hilarious.
Games that mix genres of other games are pretty cool. 3-D dungeons and Sim-City-like building made this fun, and Dark Cloud 2 upped the ante with (hurray!) an invention system.
This absolutely owned me. Stupid sleep, always getting in my way! I've logged anywhere from 200-300 hours on EACH of the series (GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas), which is why I have been reluctant to get GTA IV. No one would ever see me again.
Great FPS. I have yet to try Half Life 2, though.
I played this for the first time only a few years ago. Proof that rich, in-depth gameplay can make up for simple graphics.
