Hi, I'm Dave. I'm not a game developer as such - I'm far too busy being a full time web developer. I was a huge gamer back in the 80s/early 90s, but gave it all up to complete my BSc (Hons) in Computer Science.

I'm fascinated by algorithms and innovative game concepts. I've been a member of the indiegamer forum for a few months, and have really enjoyed the ability to see what people are doing and discuss the state of gaming and potential directions forward. I don't play games as much these days because I find it hard to find games that I find worthwhile to spend my time on. Of course I do play the odd free online game because.... why not!

Some day I'd like to develop my own innovative and cool game... but I've seen just how much goes into creating something that's polished, rather than some mangy homebrew graphics with bad collision detection that only works on your version of Windows. So it'll probably be a while. ;)

It sounds interesting... but I would say that the YouTube video seemed to have a lot of dead space when looking at screenshots, e.g. big black borders around the screen. Might've been an idea to zoom in a bit to let us see more. ;)1184022557
Oh I see! But now you've put images in my head of orcs and goblins putting on mittens, having snowball fights and making snow angels. ;) PS - I didn't realise you had replied, no notifications for this sort of thing. :)1181650073
Sounds fun. Are you sure the name is safe though? I mean "Blizzard", "War" and "RTS" in the same sentence sounds almost infringing. I don't know what the laws are like for parodies though.1180040629
I think that in more constrained systems it would be possible to maintain the illusion through a few hours of gameplay. Real-time 3D is very hard because of the possibilities. I would even be willing to concede that in the near future an AI would be able to learn someone's basic ambushing techniques and how to respond to them. But until true AI is developed (a long time away) there will always be holes that a player can learn to exploit, things the AI cannot learn. Say there's a map divided in two by a river of lava. There's two ways over: a bridge and a moving platform over the lava that can be started and stopped by pushing a button. A smart player would destroy the bridge, wait for the AI to hop on the moving platform, and pause it half way across. The AI is now stuck and can be killed at leisure. When the AI spawns on the same side the player would play normally on one half of the map. When the AI spawns on the other side the player would just wait and catch it every time. Unless it knew about weird tactics like that.1170737510
Hi. I saw you on the Game Writers group. How's things going with the LBA prequel?1170319059
I loved the Adama stare-out challenge. I assumed after 10 seconds that he never blinks. Right? ;)1170022716
Oh, don't worry about what I said about how to add a blog. I think I figured it out - create a blog on some other system and subscribe to the RSS feed, right? BTW, I actually have stuff in my profile now. Yay! ;)1169952184
Hi, I had a quick look at some of your sites (from the links provided - no creepy Googling required :P). It looks like you have a lot of experience with the industry, but I can't quite figure out the big picture. What are your main areas of interest, and how did you get into the industry? I gather that one of those areas is the analysis of fun in gaming and how to achieve it. Different players have different requirements, e.g. difficulty, speed, action content, and I wonder if a system for predicting the user's goals from the way they interact with a game could be designed to tailor the experience during play.1169943340
Ah well, as I can't ask you about that I'll take the concession prize. Could you tell me how you added a blog to your profile? I can't see a blog module in the list of things you can add. I'm not expecting a reply to my help request any time soon. ;)1169765262
I'm curious - what is Membrane Massacre about? I'm always on the look out for interesting new paradigms or twists. :)1169527397
