Games that have been successful with their hype in getting me to take a peek... or am waiting to take a peek.
So, after seeing a small developer's walkthrough I was quickly thinking back on System Shock 2 - hardly a surprise really. After adoring System Shock 2, I HAD to give this game a go. Ah... dubious morals... sounds familiar...
Half-Life is one of those games that pretty much set a massively high standard in the FPS genre. Back in the day when I didn't have the internet at home, I still managed to catch wind of this game in magazines, and was immediately impressed.
Currently an ongoing thing. Well... I'm a sucker for epics. Epic stories are where it's at for me, and from the sounds of things - Mass Effect is going to be pretty epic.
Everquest 2... well... this was pretty much my first big break into the MMORPG scene. After hearing about the success of the first one, and also quickly picking up on who was in the massive list of voice talent (*cough*onlychristopherlee*cough*) were two relatively large pulls for me. It's just a pity that EQ2 hasn't really been able to keep the crown.
Well, what can I say. I first played Daggerfall, loved it. Then I noticed Morrowind on the shelves without really hearing much about it, and played that too... Then I heard Oblivion coming many miles away. Again, the voice talent attracted my attention. Not many people can say they've had Wonder Woman, Richard Sharpe, Jean Luc Picard, and Zod working for them on a single title. The let down was that all the hype was a little over-done. I enjoyed the game immensely, but it didn't quite feel like the epic everyone was expecting.
Like with Oblivion, I heard HL2 coming along from a mile off, and I had also played the previous title. I think this title was more than a little over-hyped, however - constantly adding expectation after expectation until the experience just became "meh." I liked the game, but thanks to the hype it already felt like familiar territory.
This is one of the few early PC games (for me at least) that I heard about before I got to play it. Again, I didn't have internet access, but was still able to catch a glimpse of the game from a TV show. The idea got me really quite interested. Although I managed to get Creatures 3 before the earlier versions, I was happy with the amount of coverage it was given - enough to get me interested yet not too much.
